Chapter Twelve
Lyons and Hays found each other easily at The Brasserie, without the aid of a rolled-up newspaper. The place was filling up, and there was a nice buzz in the air along with delicious aromas of freshly prepared food.
They sat at the table that they often occupied at lunchtime, near the back of the restaurant where it was just a little quieter than the rest of the place. When they had ordered, Hays said to Lyons, âWell then, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company on this fine bright spring day, Ms Lyons?â
Lyons gave her partner an update on where they were with the case, which in fairness didnât amount to much. She also told him that she was feeling quite frustrated with the whole thing, and was hoping that he might be able to give her a few ideas on how best to proceed.
âWhatâs the Dutchman like?â Hays said.
âHeâs OK. Seems nice enough, but Iâm not under any illusion as to why heâs here,â Lyons said.
âAnd that would be?â
âHe wants to crack this organised crime gang that are up to no good with all this gold. But frankly, I couldnât give a damn about what the Lithuanians are up to in the Netherlands. All I want is to solve this murder case.â
âI see what you mean, but maybe as the two could be connected, you could help each other to sort both things out?â
âMaybe. But letâs focus on the murder for a minute. I donât think the answer lies in Utrecht. Sure, there may be a connection, but the killing happened here. So whoâs behind it? We can see the motive clearly enough â obviously the gold. The means is not in dispute, itâs just the âwhoâ that we need to get to.â
Hays could sense Lyonsâ frustration in the way she was telling the story, but just then their food arrived, and Hays hoped that she would feel a bit more positive when she had eaten. After a few mouthfuls, he ventured, âWell, there is one way you might be able to flush them out â but itâs risky.â
âGo on.â
âYou could set up a sting. Get someone to buy some of the gold off the net and wait for the thieves to come around to collect. You might not nab the murderer, but it could get you a lot further than you are now.â
âHmm, sounds reasonable. But it could take a while, and consume lots and lots of your valuable budget,â Lyons said.
âLet me worry about that. Why donât you have a chat with Janssen about it â he might have something useful to add, and he could give you an idea of the lead time between the gold being sent and it being taken back â if thatâs actually what is happening.â
âHave you some doubt about it?â
âYeah, I do. Itâs a nice story, but it sounds a bit â I donât know â wacky. Itâs too easy. Iâd say thereâs a bit more to it if you ask me.
